It is very easy for someone, especially someone new to Internet marketing, to become confused with the different terms used for products that are sold on the Internet. At some point in his or her career, Internet marketer will be presented with an opportunity to purchase the resell rights, the Master resell rights, or the private label rights to a product, book, or video. Let's explore what each of these convey.

1. Resell right. This occurs is where an author offers a purchaser a license that allows a purchaser to sell the product "as is" and to retain the proceeds from the sales. Thus the term "resell." The purchaser has the right to sell the product and keep the profits.

2. Master reseller. This is a license that allows the purchaser to sell pass on the permission to resale the product. This means that the item in question, again kept in as-is condition and without any changes, can be sold by many other people who can retain that the proceeds from the sales. Master resell rights are more valuable and accordingly cost more to acquire.

3. Private-label License. With PLR the seller of the product, book, course, or video is granting the purchaser the ability to make changes and modify the product as a purchaser deems fit or necessary. The purchaser typically adds enough changes to make it unique and personal. Thus the term "private label". These are the most valuable.

In each of these cases the purchaser will be granted a license that specifies what the purchaser is and is not entitled to do with the product. The license conveys the permissions; therefore, it must be read carefully to determine what can and cannot be done so that the purchaser does not commit copyright infringement.
